Researching Game designers
Forms of Storytelling:
There are many forms of story telling ranging from just a simple picture to acting in films and television, and even animated. Stories can be told using vision or voice, or even noises that sound nice. Stories have been around since prehistoric time. Nobody knows the real reason why cave paintings were made but many people have many different theories. But cave paintings still show a story as it is a drawing of something happening.
Another example is oral tradition. Oral Tradition is communication by speech or song about myths and legends passed down through generations. This is a lot different to communication through text or picture as it just consists of using what can be heard instead of seen.
Interactive story
A interactive story is a story that you control all that happens in the story and how it goes and ends. It is non linear story that can be story can be changed and controlled. One example is Ian Livingstone's Deathtrap Dungeon. Deathtrap Dungeon is a adventure game book. The player has to read through the story until a choice has to be made, It gives the player the chance to choose what happens in the story. Once the player has chosen, they have to turn to the page of the choice they made, the player has to try and get to key to escape and win the trial. This is a good example of story using as it lets the player choose the characters destiny, its not a linear story line.
Writing strategies
Before the Story is written there are many stages have to been done. First the time need to Mind map some Ideas and then come up with a overall Idea for what they want the story to be about. Then the writers have to Research their Idea so they can get their story the most accurate to what they want and what genre. Once they got the overall Idea and research done, then the team have to Story board the Ideas out into scenes they want and work out what looks best for showing and telling the story.
Game
Genres
What also helps so the story is the Genre of the
game. The genre is how the game is played.
Linear
and Non-Linear
They are two ways story game telling can be spilt,
Linear and Non-Linear. Linear stories does not split off and has the same
beginning, Middle and End. Non-Linear has many different choices, but there are
two main types of Non-Linear, Branching and Open world. Open World allow to
pick different parts of a main story in any order. Role playing games use this
type of narrative for telling a story. Branching Narratives can either lead off
the have many different endings, or branch off and come back into the same end.
You can choose the way you want to form the story and result in changing the
ending they way you picked. Many games of all genres use this method of story
telling.
